The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
